Donut Sales

To raise money for our chapter every semester, UMD SPS has members volunteer their time to sell donuts every weekday morning. We sell donuts at the front lobby of the physics building from 9am to 12pm. By volunteering their time every morning, our members are taking part in something that has been a tradition at our SPS chapter (on and off) for several decades. We also have drivers volunteer to pick up donuts from our local Shoppers every morning.

Set-Up Shift Instructions

Shift: 8:20 - 8:50

Arrive to your shift on time! If everything is not set up by 8:50, we lose a lot of sales as people head to their 9am classes.

If you cannot make your shift, at the earliest time possible please notify the other member on your shift AND post on the Facebook page to ask someone to cover your shift (or ask someone in person, either way, get it covered!)

1.       Arrive to the Physics Lounge by 8:20am.

2.       Open Locker #1. Retrieve the cash box.

3.       Retrieve the grey rolling cart from the back room to load the equipment onto.

4.       Open the supply cabinets with the red lock and the purple lock

5.       Load the following onto the cart:

a.       Two plastic tubs of supplies (Ensure all supplies are full. Extra supplies are in the cabinet with the purple lock)

b.      Coffee Machine with 2 Coffee Pots

c.       Water Boiler

d.      2 Coffee Air-Pot Dispensers

e.      4 Plastic Water Pitchers

f.        SPS Donut Sales Sign (Usually in back room)

g.       Cash Box

6.       Secure all locks back onto cabinets and locker before leaving the lounge

7.       Take the cart to the front lobby of the building. It helps to pull rather than push the cart

8.       Set up the sales table:

a.       Lay down the clear plastic tablecloth

b.      The two plastic tubs should go against the wall behind the table

c.       Plug the extension cord in (outlet on the wall above the trash can) and plug in the coffee machine and water boiler (Ensure they turn on!)

                                                               i.      To start water boiler, push “Reboil” and set the temperature

d.      Set-up the supplies on the table as follows:

9.       Fill the plastic pitchers with water from the faucet by the Starbucks. Fill to the line above the handle.

10.   Pour one pitcher into the water boiler.

11.   Make the first batch of coffee. Coffee instructions:

a.       Position the coffee pot on the lower warming plate of the coffee maker

b.      Slide out the filter basket and empty the old filter and grounds into the “Used Ground Coffee Can” (Should be under table or on cart)

c.       Wipe out the filter basket and place a new filter into the basket

d.      Measure out about 1.5 cups of fresh coffee grounds and pour them into the filter

e.      Slide the newly full basket into its place in the coffee machine

f.        If the plastic jugs are not already full of water, fill one to the line above the handle from the tap nearby the Starbucks stand down the hall.

g.       Open the black flap at the top of the coffee machine and pour the water from the jug into the machine

h.      Once coffee has finished pouring into the coffee pot, empty the pot into the dispenser

i.         Repeat until the dispensers are full (or your shift is ended), and NEVER reuse coffee grounds!

12.   Place the Pricing Sign in a visible area

13.   Wait at the table until the next shift arrives. Carry on with any transactions in the meantime.
